Naotkamegwanning First Nation, (also known as Whitefish Bay First Nation,) is a proud Ojibwe Nation of the Treaty Three Territory. Our community has the opportunity to restore decision-making control (governance) of our reserve lands back to our people. We can achieve this by establishing the Naotkemegwanning First Nation Land Code.
Naotkamegwanning First Nation is currently developing a land code to transfer land management jurisdiction from the federal government to our community members and the First Nation as a whole.
We entered as a signatory to the Framework Agreement on First Nation Land Management on March 28, 2019. This Framework Agreement provides First Nations with the option to govern their reserve lands and resources under their own land codes, free from constraints imposed by the federal government and the Indian Act. The option to govern reserve lands and operate outside the Indian Act can only be achieved with the consent of Naotkamegwanning First Nation band members by means of a ratification vote.
